3 Tips to Having a Strong Relationship

Couples who enter marriage thinking that love is all about roses and chocolate are in for a big surprise. Developing and maintaining a healthy relationship requires work. On the other hand, married people tend to live longer and be happier than singles. So, it’s worth trying, right? You can start with these simple relationship tips.

1) Make time for each other. You’re probably busy. Most people are. People are busy with work, children and hobbies. The problem is that a lot of people don’t put their spouses on the to-do list, and next thing they know, they’re busy with a total divorce.

Having a weekly date night, for example, can help you schedule time together. At night, catch up on how the day went instead of falling asleep immediately. Too tired? Maybe you should consider running together instead of hitting the gym alone. Figure out how to spend time together, even if you have to put it on the calendar.

2) Play on the same team. That sounds obvious, but it’s amazing how many people start playing against each other during the early years of marriage. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t argue (see the next tip), but always remember that you love each other, and you’re rooting for mutual success and happiness.

3) Face the fire. What’s the worst thing you can do with conflict? Avoid it. People argue about money, sex, children and all kinds of issues. That’s part of life. Usually, these fights aren’t really about right or wrong, they are about differing opinions. Try to understand opposing viewpoints, and talk it out.

Even if you follow the above tips, marriage isn’t a piece of cake. Just remember to keep trying as long as the benefits outweigh the challenges!

Keeping Your Children in School

Many people have heard of people that dropped out of High School and went on to be very successful, such as Cher, Kurt Cobain, and Eric Clapton.  These stories are sometimes used as inspiration that you can do whatever you set your mind to, and sometimes they are used to tell students that they do not actually need to graduate High School.  These people still rise up occasionally today, dropping out of High School and becoming rich through hard work, talent, luck, or simply by inheritance.  Unfortunately for many people, this option has become less and less realistic over the years.  Cher and Eric Clapton dropped out of High School half a century ago, in what was a very different world.  Kurt Cobain dropped out of school more recently, but was very much helped by luck and had a lot of talent.  If your child wants to drop out of High School, it is important that he or she knows the risks that go along with that decision.  In the 1950′s, a college degree was only needed for high-end jobs and a High School diploma was not required for many jobs.  Unfortunately, today a High School diploma is required for almost all jobs and even people with college degrees have trouble finding work.  Dropping out of High School can be a very hard decision to undo, requiring one to get a GED which becomes harder and harder the longer one is out of High School.  At the very least, make sure that your child puts a lot of thought and research into his or her decision before dropping out.

Asperger’s Syndrome in Children

Most parents have many goals for their children.  In the long run, they might hope their child becomes a Doctor, Lawyer, or President.  In the short term, some parents may hope the baby has “her Mommy’s eyes” or “his Daddy’s nose” or other characteristics; however, most parents truly just hope their child is born healthy and without complications.  Unfortunately, that is not always the case.  One disorder that can be debilitating for a child is Asperger Syndrome.

Asperger Syndrome, or AS, is a branch of Autism which can often be observed at very young ages.  AS usually displays difficulties in social situations and intense, sometimes repetitive behaviors and interests.  This can be a difficult disorder for children to triumph over, as it can have a very serious impact on a child’s ability to understand social interactions, most of which people learn as a young child.  Luckily, AS is usually considered one of the least debilitating forms of Autism, as it usually has no effect on the linguistic parts of the brain, allowing people with AS to learn and understand language skills as easily as others.  Also, people with AS sometimes are indistinguishable from people without AS once they reach their teenage years, as social skills should have developed by then.  On one hand, this can keep other people from discriminating against people with AS, but it also means that if a person with AS has trouble in a situation then people might not understand that there is a medical problem at work.  Regardless, AS is a serious problem and should be addressed as soon as it is observed in a child.
