Unfortunately, moving is a part of life. It doesn’t matter who you are, there will be times in your life where moving your belongings to a new place is a necessary evil. Sometimes the process of relocating can involve having to downsize to a smaller living space and downsize your belongings as a result. During hard economic times, this seems to happen more and more. So how does one go about beginning the downsizing process in an effective way?
First of all, start sorting out items in living spaces you use the least (such as a basement, living room, or guest bedroom). That will help you not have heaps of clutter bogging down high traffic areas. Also, in the rooms you start in, begin tackling large items first (like furniture) and work down to smaller items (like books or keepsakes).
Have a sorting system in place when going through your items to make that process run smoothly. Consider using stickers to label items or large plastic containers labeled with KEEP, DONATE and DISCARD. If you are planning on selling items in a garage sale or online, make sure to label those as well.
Remember not to burn yourself out. Schedule blocks of time, no more than two hours, to sort items to help you not feel overwhelmed and tapped out physically, emotionally and mentally during this time. Also, allow yourself a lot of time to go through this process. It can be very taxing on a person to have to sort through all of there belongings in a rushed format, and it will usually not be done effectively.
As human beings we become attached to belongings and this can be hard to face when trying to downsize your possessions. However, it can be done and can even be a freeing process, making your move and new start at Virginia Beach apartments more manageable and more enjoyable.
